The Brooklyn District bracket of the State of Ohio hockey playoffs was down to 8 teams when the Baron Cup lll champion Avon Lake Shoremen took on the Baron Cup l runner-up, Rocky River Pirates. The game was as good as advertised in the first period when Rocky River fired 15 shots on goal to Avon Lake’s 10, and the period ended in a scoreless tie. After a mostly back and forth second period, Rocky River was able to take a 1-0 lead into the dressing room after two periods, off a late goal. Unfortunately for the Shoremen, the fast-skating and hard-hitting Pirates wore down Avon Lake and scored 5 unanswered third period goals and won by a final score of 6-0.
It was only the second time all season that Avon Lake was shutout; the prior one coming against Hudson High School almost three months ago. Despite their failure to score in the contest, the high scoring Shoremen can be proud of the record-setting goal total of 205 that they accumulated during the season,
Defensively, the Shoremen were led by goaltender Cameron Stepka who played her last game for Avon Lake. She made several outstanding saves amongst her 41 on the night. She finished the season with an impressive record of 18-4.
Avon Lake ends their record breaking season with an overall record of 27-7. Highlights included; three Baron Cup playoff wins, a Baron Cup championship, and two wins in the state tournament for the first time in over ten years. It was a total team effort from start to finish and several players were recognized for outstanding performances throughout the season. This includes, but is not limited to four players who have been selected to play in the GCHSHL Senior All-Star Game On March 4th at The Q. Those players are Captain Jared Aslaksen, Captain Patrick Graney, Connor Koncelik and Cameron Stepka.
The team wants to thank all the parents, alumni, fans of the team, and school administrators for all their support during the season.
