In the final non-league game of the season, Avon Lake hosted Western Reserve Academy of the GCHSHL Red North Division. In a fast-paced game the Shoremen peppered the opposition goalie with 70 shots and prevailed by a final score of 6-4.
After WRA scored first, sophomore Nick Ospelt tied the game after converting a nice pass from Jared Aslaksen. Before the first period was over senior defenseman Connor Koncelik scored two goals in a remarkable 8 seconds. He now has a team-leading 30 goals on the season. Ospelt and Patrick Graney were credited with assists on the two goals. That was Graney’s 40th point of the season and Ospelt’s 20th, and both players also displayed relentless checking throughout the contest. Freshman Luke Farthing increased the Shoremen lead to 4-1 when he sniped a top-shelf goal (his 14th of the season) after receiving a great pass from Tommy Kacmarcik. Brian Walasinski then crashed the net for his 8th goal (and first game winning goal) of his sophomore campaign, with assists going to Aslaksen and Koncelik. Aslaksen scored the sixth and final goal of the game after a perfect pass from junior assistant captain Tim Lubertozzi. Lubertozzi reached a career high of 30 points on the season.
The defense limited WRU to 17 shots on goal and was anchored by Koncelik, Joey Kleinhenz, Hunter Hall, Colin Reynolds, Devin Elliott and a pair of freshmen; Isaac Young and Jacob Schaltenbrand. Goalie Dillon Aslaksen got the win for Avon Lake and is now 7-3 on the season.
Avon Lake won its fourth consecutive game and improved to 21-6 overall on the season. They finish the regular season Tuesday January 30th when they take on GCHSHL Blue North Division rival Aurora High School. The puck drops at 8:35pm at Rocky River’s Hamilton Rink
