On Sunday October 21st, Avon Lake boys soccer head coach Pete Klepek was selected by the Greater Cleveland Scholastic Soccer Coaches Association as the 2018 Boys Division 1 Coach of the Year for public schools.
Chosen by his coaching peers throughout Northeast Ohio, the award comes on the heels of Klepek also being named Lorain County Division 1 Co-Coach of the Year (along with Amherst Steele’s Drew Biedenbach).
This recognition comes after the Shoremen won a school-record 13 games during the regular season (13-2-1, 7-1-1 SWC) and finished as narrow runners up for the conference championship. Third seed Avon Lake lost a tough game in the District Semi-finals in the Division 1 Elyria District playoffs, after defeating Westlake at home on Saturday.
In his two years as head coach, following a year as an Avon Lake assistant coach under Matt DeCapua, Coach Klepek and the Shoremen have amassed a record of 25-6-5, winning almost 70% of their games.
“I am truly humbled to receive this honor,” said Coach Klepek. “It is not something I expected but is something I am proud to share with this team. This recognition is for the Shoremen soccer program and I’m excited to keep it going.”
Coach Klepek will receive his award at the Greater Cleveland Scholastic Soccer Coaches Association end of season banquet in November. Congratulations to Coach Klepek and the rest of the soccer program.
