#4 seed Avon Lake emerged victorious in their sectional semifinal match up against visiting #13 Lorain by a score of 11-0.
It didn’t take long for the Shoremen to take control of this game, with senior Charlie Yungvirt breaking down the Titan defense on the right side before calmly passing across the box for junior Edison Lemanowicz to finish, and the rout was on. The goal was Lemanowicz’s 8th on the year, second most on the team.
Five minutes later a beautiful diagonal long ball from junior right back Joey Caputo found fellow junior Cam Salco streaking towards the Titan goal, and Salco finished to make it 2-0. The assist was Caputo’s second of the season.
Just one minute later, Salco his second goal of the game, this time courtesy of sophomore Spencer Chippi, whose cross to the top of the six was met and hammered home to make it 3-0.
Senior Nick Daggett tallied next, after Lorain had managed a bit of possession but was dispossessed by sophomore Josh Lawniczak, who alertly played Daggett through on a quick counter. Daggett’s finish to the near post made the score 4-0 halfway through the first half. The assist was Lawniczak’s second of the season.
In the 27th minute of play Daggett, scorer of plenty of goals, earned his first assist of the season, after finding freshman Liam Reutter in front of goal, whose strike made the score 5-0. The goal was Reutter’s first varsity goal of his career.
Next up was senior Matt Furrer just two minutes later, who scored his second goal of the year on a bouncing ball from the edge of the box that he volleyed into the upper 90 for a beautiful goal, making it 6-0 Shoremen.
The Shoremen wrapped up their first half scoring barrage in the 33rd minute after Reutter returned the favor to Daggett by assisting him on his second goal of the game to make it 7-0. The goal was Daggett’s team-leading 11th.
In the second half, the Shoremen made some adjustments to their lineup and style of play, but the results were more of the same. In the 43rd minute senior Philip Jones, moonlighting as a striker, was played through by a long ball from the back by Yungvirt. Jones, with a rare opportunity to play on the field, sprinted past the defense, held his ground as a closing defender ran into him, and coolly passed the ball through the legs of the Titan goalie for his first career goal, making it 8-0.
In another first, senior Carter Chippi also scored his first goal of the year off an assist from Reutter, as held held off two defenders and slotted home to the far side netting, to bring the score to 9-0.
In the 76th minute Salco gained his hat trick, as a short pass to the right side of the box from Furrer was picked up, then followed by a sharp cut inside to beat the Lorain defender and goalie and allowed an easy left footed finish. The three goals for Salco bring his season mark to 6, while the assist was Furrer’s first of the year.
One minute later the final score was had after junior Kristof Nieschwitz found a bouncing ball in the box from Salco and hit a low first-time shot that hit the back of the net to make it 11-0. The goal was the first varsity goal for Nieschwitz and Salco’s 5th assist on the season.
Though overmatched, the Lorain Titans continued to put forth great effort and worked hard to push the Shoremen. Their ability to maintain energy and push through a lopsided score line to fight until the final whistle is to be commended.
“We handled our business tonight,” said head coach Pete Klepek. “The starters did well and earned a lot of playing time for the guys that have pushed them all year long. I’m happy that we got a number of first time goalscorers tonight, but now it’s time to buckle down as we prepare to face Berea-Midpark again.”
With the win, the Shoremen improve their record to 10-3-4 and advance to the sectional final against #5 seed Berea-Midpark. That game will be hosted at Avon Lake on Saturday October 21st at 7pm.
