Westlake High School
Avon Lake High School
In a back and forth affair where each team held the lead at one point, Avon Lake and Westlake ended up tying 2-2.
It was what you would expect from an SWC battle between conference title contenders. Avon Lake controlled the game from the opening whistle, putting Westlake on their heels. Junior Edison Lemanowicz capitalized on a slow to react Demon defense to fire home the first goal of the game off an assist from junior Andrew Jacobson.
Westlake eventually settled down but the Shoremen still gained the majority of possession and opportunities on goal. However none of those opportunities could find the net and the score stayed 1-0 through halftime.
The second half was a different story. After a tentative opening 15 minutes, the Demons scored the tying goal after a flicked on header found an open man inside the box for a finish to the far post.
A few minutes later Westlake struck a shot from long distance that had both power and movement, and sophomore goalie Stephen Jones could only parry it away. Unfortunately the Shoremen were slow to react themselves and the Demons got a second chance in on goal, with another snap save for Jones. Third time was the charm as Westlake took that rebound and passed it into an open net to gain a 2-1 advantage.
From that point Avon Lake was up against a stout defense that dropped guys in numbers in hopes of protecting the lead. It was a breathless final 15 minutes as the Shoremen pushed to get back into the game, and they finally did as senior Nick Daggett scored his third of the year off a shot from sophomore Drew DelGiudice with under 8 to play.
Avon Lake had the best chance of the last few minutes from a Lemanowicz shot that the Westlake keeper barely punched out, but no one was there to capitalize, and in the end it was a deserved tie.
The Shoremen move to 2-0-3 on the year, 1-0-2 in the SWC. JV tied 0-0, and they are now 4-0-1. Avon Lake has a week before their next game, away to Lakewood on Wednesday September 6th at 5 and 7pm.
