Avon Lake High School
In a game that was tough and physical, the Avon Lake Shoremen tied hosts Avon High School 0-0.
The first 5 minutes of the game were all Avon as the home team quickly established possession and got the Shoremen on their back foot. If not for a stellar early save from sophomore goalie Stephen Jones, this game could have looked very different.
Once Avon Lake settled down they slowly began to assert more control of the game, and found themselves creating opportunities and controlling the action more. The game went to halftime tied at 0-0 despite the Shoremen out shooting the Eagles 6-4.
The second half was more of the same, a back and forth battle that you expect from a rivalry game. Avon outshot Avon Lake 8-4 in the second, including 5 shots on goal.
But time and again Jones provided steady goalkeeping to keep the Shoremen in the game. In what was his best performance of the season he finished with 8 saves, several of the spectacular variety.
Neither team could find the game winner, and after a tense 80 minutes the scoreboard still read 0-0 in a game much more exciting than its score line would indicate. The Shoremen move their record to 2-0-2, 1-0-1 SWC.
In the early game Avon Lake JV earned a 1-0 victory of Avon JV. Despite a dominating performance, the Shoremen needed a free kick goal late in the game from junior Michael Mandel to put away the Eagles.
Next up for Avon Lake is another SWC clash with perennial league contenders Westlake, at home on Wednesday August 30th. Games are at 5 and 7.
