Avon Lake High School
North Olmsted High School
The Avon Lake Shoremen boys soccer team held on for a 2-1 win at SWC rival North Olmsted this evening to earn their first conference win of the year.
In a typical competitive matchup in the SWC, the Shoremen got on the board first, scoring early through a header off of a corner kick by junior Andrew Jacobson, his first of the year. The goal was assisted from the corner kick of senior Jack Lawniczak.
About ten minutes later the Eagles were able to pull a goal back and level the score, and from that point forward it was a back and forth affair. The teams stayed knotted at 1-1 through halftime.
But Avon Lake took the lead for good just 4 minutes into the second half, when senior Aidan Flinn hit a perfectly weighted through ball that fellow senior Nick Daggett ran onto and then delivered into the back of the net via a strike from the right side of the 18 yard box. The goal was Daggett’s second of the season.
The Shoremen continued to apply pressure, looking for a third goal to pad their lead, but could not find the finishing touch. And the Eagles also continued to look for their equalizer, frequently playing long balls to try to catch the Shoremen off guard. In the end Avon Lake held on for a hard fought victory, to bring their record to 2-0-1 (1-0 SWC).
In the late game the JV also took home a win, beating North Olmsted’s JV 4-1 on the strength of sophomore Will Meyer’s hat trick and a goal from fellow sophomore Ryan Smith, the first of his career. They are 3-0 on the season so far.
The Shoremen head to Avon on Saturday for a big early season SWC test, games at 5 and 7.
