Strongsville High School
Avon Lake High School
Avon Lake took on Strongsville Sunday night in the Brooklyn District of the OSHSAA state playoffs. A talented Strongsville team from the GCHSHL Red Conference (two levels above the Shoremen) was too much for Avon Lake with the Mustangs winning 5-2. Avon lake worked hard throughout the contest but could not overcome a poor second period when they gave up three goals. The Shoremen were led offensively by three players who remained hot at the end of the season. Junior Jared Aslaksen ( 6 point in final 4 games) scored on a pass from sophomore Tim Lubertozzi (4 points in last 4 games). Junior Patrick Graney (9 points in last 4 games) also scored on another nice pass from Lubertozzi. Graney and Lubertozzi both had career highs in points on the season, with 48 and 25 respectively. Cameron Stepka was spectacular in goal for the Shoremen turning aside a season high 41 shots.
The loss brings the 2016-2017 season to a close, but it does not diminish the many accomplishments that the hard working student athletes accomplished this season, including:
-Going 23-5-1 overall on the season and breaking the school record for wins
-Having two winning streaks of 7 games each
-Winning the GCHSHL Blue North Division title
-Every player on the roster having at least a + 1 rating on the season.
-Scoring the second most goals of any team in the Cleveland area, with freshmen accounting for 61 of them.
-Jared Aslaksen breaking the school record for goals in a season (48) and career, with his senior season forthcoming.
The Shoremen extend thanks to the administration, parents and fans for all their support throughout the season!
