Avon Lake High School
Twinsburg High School
The Shoremem played their 12th and final league game of the 16-17 season and finished in fine fashion with a 7-0 shutout victory over Blue North Division rival Twinsburg High School. In it’s first season in the division, Avon Lake went 11-0-1 and accumulated 23 of a possible 24 points while earning the #1 seed going into the Baron Cup lll playoffs.
Penalty problems plagued the Shoremen in the first period until Patrick Graney scored a short-handed goal from Alex Kelly. Both players have multiple game scoring streaks and have stepped up tremendously recently when Avon Lake needed scoring. Graney’s 18th goal and 40th point of the season ultimately became the game-winning-goal and surpassed his career-best point total at Avon Lake,..
At the end of the period Kelly absorbed a wicked hit that resulted in a 5 minute boarding call against Twinsburg. The Shoremen made them pay when Jared Aslaksen scored a power-play from Graney and freshman Nick Ospelt. Avon Lake took a 3-0 lead into the locker room after two periods when Tommy Kacmarcik scored his 22nd goal of his freshman campaign with the assist going to Ospelt.
The Shoremen came out flying in the third period and scored four goals to seal the victory. Ospelt scored twice in the period and had five points on the night. He became the 5th Shoremen (along with Aslaksen, Graney, Kacmarcik and Kelly) to register at least 30 points on the season. Aslaksen scored his second goal off a great pass from Tim Lubertozzi, with Mia Federle earning the other assist. Senior Dylan Sammons also scored from the door step after nice passing from Aslaksen and Ospelt. Despite battling a lacerated chin, Kelly led by example as his Avon Lake career as captain draws to a close. He added another assist in the third period, as did Graney (2), Aslaksen, and defenseman Colin Reynolds.
Goaltender Dillon Aslaksen bailed out his teammates on multiple occasions as he fought off 15 quality Twinsburg shots for the victory. He registered his 4th shutout of the season and raised his save percentage to an impressive .92 on his freshman season.
Avon Lake improved to 21-3-1 overall on the season and returns to action for their final regular season game on Super Bowl Sunday. The puck drops at 4:15pm against Lakewood High School at Rocky River Rink.
