Westlake High School
Avon Lake High School
The Shoremen honored five of their teammates on “senior night” as they took on cross-town rival Westlake High School in a non-league contest and won their 20th game of the season. After a sluggish and scoreless first two periods, Avon Lake finally solved a hot Westlake goalie with five unanswered goals in the third period. Jared Aslaksen led the Shoremen offensively and recorded his seventh hat trick of the season. Two of the goals came on breakaways after he received great passes from senior captain Alex Kelly. Sandwiched between Aslaksen’s goals was an unassisted laser shot from assistant captain Patrick Graney. Avon Lake also scored on the power play when senior Dylan Sammons camped in front of the net and deflected a shot from the point. Aslaksen and Graney were credited with assists on the play. Graney and Kelly are now tied for the team lead in assists with 21 each. Joey Kleinhenz also had an assists on Aslaksen’s first goal, which turned out to be the game winning goal.
The defense was strong all night and held Westlake to only 8 shots. Goaltender Cameron Stepka earned her second shutout of the season, and the team’s fifth. She improved her season record to 10-3-1.
The Shoremen are now 20-3-1overall and return to GCHSHL action Tuesday night January 31st when they take on Normandy High School. The puck drops at 8:35pm at Rocky River Rink.
