Game Recap

In what was a tight game for the whole first half and start of the second, Olmsted Falls earned a 3-0 victory over Avon Lake.

From the opening kickoff, both teams had runs of good play as they fought in the first half to establish control. It felt like a playoff atmosphere as the Bulldogs brought a sizable cheering section, cowbell and all.

The best chance for Avon Lake happened with 10 minutes left in the first when senior Jack Lawniczak got the ball in the corner and beat his defender to get to the end line for a dangerous ball into the 6 yard box. Two Shoremen were converging but the ball was swept away before it could be turned home.

The half ended with a deserved scoreline of 0-0. The Shoremen looked to maintain their level of play entering the second and did–but only for a few minutes. In the second half, the half chances Olmsted Falls got all seemed to find the back of the net.

In the 47th minute an Avon Lake clearance ended up right back at the feet of a Bulldog player, who took it wide and sent a cross in that was hammered home to make it 1-0.

The next 15 minutes or so Avon Lake competed again, mostly playing Olmsted Falls even but having a hard time generating consistent offense. The Shoremen were without second leading scorer Edison Lemanowicz, who was forced out of the lineup due to injury right before kickoff, and his presence up top was missed.

Olmsted Falls added their second goal in the 64th minute, and it looked very similar to the first. The Bulldogs beat a Shoremen defender down the left side and put in a cross that their teammate beat another Shoremen defender to and hit it home.

At this point a tired Avon Lake team was pushing forward to try and make something happen, while Olmsted Falls cleared any chances long in hopes of finding a runner in space or a bouncing ball to contest.

Just 3 minutes later fortune favored the Bulldogs as the Shoremen stopped a shot in the box only to have the rebound stay right at the feet of the Bulldog player. His second attempt was right at the keeper Stephen Jones but managed to squirt underneath him to make the final margin 3-0.

“I thought we played hard in the first half and played the SWC champs even,” said head coach Pete Klepek. “Giving up the goal early in the second changed the complexion of the game, and we could not recover. Congratulations to Olmsted Falls on earning the championship.”

With the loss Avon Lake drops to 7-3-4 on the season, 3-2-3 in the SWC.

In the early game the JV earned a tidy 2-0 victory, with goals by freshman Liam Reutter and sophomore Will Meyer. JV improves to 11-2-1 on the year.

It’s a quick turnaround for the Shoremen as they travel to Mentor tomorrow for away games at 5pm and 7pm.
