Game Recap

The Avon Lake Shoremen held off a late rally from the Lakewood Rangers to emerge with a 4-3 away victory.

The Shoremen couldn’t have gotten off to a better start, as they took a quick 1-0 lead on a goal by junior Edison Lemanowicz in the second minute. The goal was off a cross by fellow junior Andrew Jacobson, who had intercepted a ball in Lakewood’s half and beaten multiple guys to the end line.

More of the same followed as Avon Lake continued to apply pressure and turn the Rangers over in their own half. Lemanowicz put in another in the 12th minute after he beat the keeper to a ball in the box, absorbed a hit and kept his composure to score from a tight angle. He has 5 goals on the year.

A third goal came later in the first half after senior Jack Lawniczak picked up a ball and dribbled through the Lakewood defense before hitting a left footed shot across the box that senior Nick Daggett slammed home to make it 3-0.

The Shoremen were in control and comfortable with the lead as the second half began. Lakewood generated chances but were not able to sustain an attack, often strayed offsides and were prone to turnovers in the back. Then came the lightning delay.

With 22 minutes on the clock both teams retreated to their locker rooms to wait out the mandatory 30 minute lightning delay. When the teams took the field afterwards, it was Lakewood that asserted control.

A poor Avon Lake pass gave Lakewood a quick counter that they finished to make it 3-1 with 20 minutes left. Lakewood struck again 4 minutes later to make it 3-2 and the game was on.

Lakewood continued to press for the equalizer as the Shoremen looked to steady the ship. With 6 minutes left senior Charlie Yungvirt won possession and found Daggett streaking forward on his left, and Daggett calmly turned home his second of the game to make it 4-2. He now has 5 goals on the year, tied for the team lead with Lemanowicz.

The two goal cushion was short lived however as a Lakewood forward was played into the box and took an unassisted tumble when Jones approached. The ref saw the fall and rushed in from his vantage point at mid field to award a penalty kick, which the Rangers converted to make it 4-3 with under 5 to go.

Avon Lake weathered the storm in the last few minutes to come away with an important SWC road win. They improve their record to 3-0-3 on the year, 2-0-2 in the SWC.

The Shoremen JV suffered their first defeat on the season, 3-1 to Lakewood’s JV. They drop to 4-1-1 overall.

Next game for both teams is on Saturday, at home versus Elyria. Games are at 1pm and 3pm.
