Game Recap

The Shoremen traveled to the Kent State arena today to take on Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy, who entered the contest with a 5-game winning streak and climbing the standings in the Greater Cleveland High School Hockey League Blue North Division. Avon Lake was not only up to the task by winning 4-1. but they also clinched the division title in the process.
A group of hard working freshmen stepped up to the challenge and paced the Shoremen. Freshman Brian Walasinski opened the scoring with the assist going to fellow frosh, Nick Ospelt. During the second period the freshmen were at it again when Tommy Kacmarcik hustled after his own rebound and knocked home what ultimately became the game-winning goal. Freshman defenseman Devin Elliott got credit for the only assist. Avon Lake increased their lead to 3-0 when Patrick Graney fired a perfect shot from the face off circle into the top corner. Senior captain Alex Kelly, who played a strong defensive game, assisted on the Graney goal. In the third period Kacmarcik and Tim Lubertozzi combined for on a nifty passing play which resulted in another goal for Kacmarcik. He now has 20 goals in his impressive rookie campaign.

Cameron Stepka was solid in goal and earned the victory by turning aide 21 CVCA shots. Overall team defense was consistently good all night, with Walasinski and Lubertozzi particularly supportive of the defensive corps of Kelly, Elliott, Joey Kleinhenz, Colin Reynolds, Hunter Hall and Trevor White.

Avon Lake improved to 19-0-3 on the season. They are right back in action Sunday January 29th against Westlake High School. Senior Night ceremonies start at 4:00pm at the Rocky River Rink
